Krawczyk trained at the USTA Training Center in Carson, California, for nine months during her junior year of high school. Her parents homeschooled her while she lived in a hotel next to the gym so she could have the chance to turn professional while in high school.

“College was the path I felt I needed to take,” Krawczyk said. “When I did the benefits, I didn’t think it suited me and financially it wasn’t possible, although my father would have found a way to solve the problem.”

She was introduced to the sport by her father, Teddy, who immigrated from Poland and picked up tennis as an adult, playing in events at clubs around the desert. Tedi would take Desirae with him when he hit the courts at the Cathedral Canyon Tennis Club, where he was a member.

“She was very bubbly,” said Grace Baraniak, a close family friend. “She climbed the fence, she talked to everyone. That’s how she was introduced to tennis, being around tennis and playing adults, not kids.”

Krawczyk spent the next 12 years playing in junior camps and academies and was coached by Gordon Zawtun, the Palm Valley County Club tennis coach. He also trained with respected tennis coach Jackie Cooper and Glenn Erickson, director of tennis at the Palm Springs Tennis Club while at Palm Desert High School.

After spending her junior year in Carson – staying in a hotel five days a week and returning to the desert on weekends – she was asked if she wanted to start her professional career. She was 17 years old.

“I didn’t think I was mature enough to be on my own and travel with a coach,” said Krawczyk. “So I graduated high school and went to ASU. It’s something I definitely don’t regret at all.”

Krawczyk became the Sun Devils’ top singles player and also played doubles, where he began to appreciate and enjoy the partnerships and camaraderie of playing with a teammate.

“She was also a very good doubles player,” McInerney said. “She can serve and she’s really athletic. She became a better doubles player in college, that’s for sure. I think most players, their doubles improves a lot when they will go to college because every game counts. You play under pressure every game.”

Krawczyk graduated from college in 2016, and it took about two years of playing in lower-level ITF events before she became an established WTA Tour player.

He tried singles and won some matches, but it was doubles where he started to see big results. She teamed up with Giuliana Olmos of Mexico and together they won events in the Caribbean, Mexico, Korea and Sacramento in 2017 before playing in her first WTA event at the Citi Open in Washington, DC

“We worked our way up,” Krawczyk said. “We started from ground zero and because I had done so well in doubles so quickly, I stuck with it and really enjoyed it.”

Events followed in Quebec, Hong Kong, Thailand and Taipei. She played a total of 16 WTA events in 2018 and won her first WTA doubles title in Switzerland with Guarachi.

Two months later, Krawczyk won her first Grand Slam match when she and Monique Adamczak won their first doubles match at the US Open. Open. They lost their second match to eventual winners Ash Barty and Coco Vandeweghe.

“Our games really complement each other,” Guarachi said. “The left and the right, sometimes she can be more precise with her left, I’m more powerful and I can place her from behind.”

In Olmos, Guarachi and others, Krawczyk has established close friendships on the tour, which McInerney described as a travel sorority. These close relationships off the field probably contributed to her success.

“Being on tour, it’s kind of a lonely life,” Baraniak said. “But with her attitude, she’s a happy person and she attracted friends to her. I don’t think she would survive in the sport if it weren’t for her tennis friends.”

“I wanted to achieve greatness,” Woodforde said, “I wanted to be set up with somebody on a regular basis so I could know their fundamentals, how they handle the pressure, so they could know how I handle the pressure, to exceed. and achieve the high standards we strive to achieve.”

Krawczyk and Guarachi have that relationship. Guarachi said they plan to remain dual partners for the rest of the year and maybe longer.

“At the French Open, when we had that success, we thought, ‘OK, we can really do this and compete with the best,'” Guarachi said. “It was when we were in a good position where we could commit to each other throughout the year. I think that helped us, knowing that we could play with a partner constantly and not worry for what each other does well.”

“Often we change partners all the time and it’s hard to get used to one person, and now I think what clicks is the consistency of playing together.”
